STRUCTURE AND LANGUAGE

Length of an Article

Each article must be between minimum 1000 and maximum 1500 words. This does not include references, further sources, keywords or glossary terms. It is crucial that you keep to this word length.

Writing style

Contributors should write for scholars and students at advanced university level – advance undergraduates, graduate students and above, without loss of accuracy. All articles need to be accessible to someone without extensive prior knowledge of the particular country context.

All articles should be written in the third person. Articles should be self-contained and written as clearly as possible, and the use of undefined jargon should be avoided. An article should have an objective tone.

Insofar as you feel able to draw the distinction, please mark the transition from factual to interpretive or controversial material. You are invited to include your own views, while avoiding partisanship or polemic. It is always most appropriate in an article to summarize debates rather than to participate in them. In addition, avoid hyperbole and unsupported statements about the importance, virtue, or glory of people, events, or geographical areas.

Where available, articles need to be backed-up by relevant statistical information. Please only include up-to-date and reliable data in a form of tables and graphs.

Language

All articles must be written in US English. Variant forms (British, Australian, Canadian etc.) are not acceptable, and the copy-editor will amend the article to suit the language requirements.
