Chapter Two

SLEEPER: Short Film

Sleeper is a mixed media short film that blurs the lines between being awake and asleep, the real and surreal. After falling asleep on a train a young woman is lured by a monkey into a nightmare-dreamscape.

CAST & CREW

Cast: R. Kadambari

Director/Animator/Designer: Craig Gladding

Sound Design/Re-recording Mixer: Kahra Scott-James

On Sound:

Sleeper is an example of a completely SFX driven film; even the dialogue and music are effectively sound effects.  The overall sound design mirrors the visual aesthetics, rhythm and the way dreams and nightmares tend to feel disconnected, fractured and “not quite right”.   Some of the sound effects are real and organic, some are synthetic; generated from old analog synthesizers and newer virtual instruments, and some are a combination of both real and generated.  Various elements were layered to create a sense of reality, hyper-reality and surrealism, while the mix purposefully borders “nonsensical”; certain effects are louder and more present than they should be, or would be, in a different film.
