Chapter Four

SOUND DESIGN FX & TEXTURES

On Sound:

These “raw samples” have been generated through the use of synthesizers, virtual instruments and samplers, via the process of reading scripts, looking at mood boards, visual treatments and via conversations with directors.  Sound Effect and Sound Design libraries can be created during pre-production and production, which can be helpful for the picture editor.  Often people underestimate the time involved in designing sound and creating libraries, so the earlier a Sound Designer is involved the better.  Frequently a word, phrase or reference to a psychological or emotional state triggers ideas for non-literal sound design elements, blurring the line between sound effects, soundscapes and music, and often to such an extent that audiences and film reviewers “mistake” sound design for musical score.
