This introductory chapter sets out the vision of the book for the ways online learning should develop to meet four interrelated demands: quality, scale, equity and sustainability. The chapter introduces the ideas being explored in the research projects, and the theoretical and methodological frameworks that form the basis of the book. These are: 'collaborative learning design', 'online for inclusivity', 'collaborative professional development', 'deep learning for professionals' link to section', the 'benefits-costs balance for online learning and teaching', 'CoMOOCs', ‘transformative online education' and an 'iterative theory of change' for interventions. The sections explain the thinking behind the book title: why professional collaboration, why a global vision, what we mean by evidence-based. Overall, the argument is that one significant future pathway for online learning is global professional collaboration on a massive scale, to contribute to solving the most challenging global problems our cultures have ever faced.
