DEREK SEWARD is Emeritus Professor of engineering design at Lancaster University, UK, where he was formerly Head of Engineering and the University's Director for Regional Outreach. He joined the University after a period as a design structural engineer for consultants and a local authority. His teaching was in the areas of structures and system safety and he was involved in research into intelligent construction robots.
