Ideas of nationality and ethnicity remain as relevant and emotive as ever, becoming more complex and sensitive with each generation. Studying the “Invention of the Barbarian” is an engaging and useful way for young people to confront these issues.
Learners will develop a range of source analysis skills. They will be inspired and appalled by Medea and fascinated by the characters in Herodotus, and will also engage with examples of Persian material culture in this wide-ranging topic. Each section has a different feel to help retain the enthusiasm of learners throughout the linear course.
Correction to the print edition
pp. 28/31 - the PS kylix (Fig. 1.11) is 'by' not 'in the manner of' the Triptolemos Painter
p.42 – Figure 1.16 does not show a section of the Bassae frieze and will be replaced at the next reprint with the image here. The caption will then read ‘Fig 1.16 shows a Greek warrior defeating an Amazon who kneels on the ground. She stretches out a strong arm to defend herself, while the hand of a fellow warrior grips the Greek’s forearm.’.
