Chapter 6 covers the key topics of Athenian Democracy. The first half of the chapter looks at how the democratic system evolved from a feudal society, first with the reforms of Solon, then those of Cleisthenes later in the 6th century, which themselves led to further reforms during the 5th century, particularly in the aftermath of the Persian Wars. The second half of the chapter examines the institutions of democracy such as the Council and the Assembly, as well as looking at the rights of citizens and other groups of the population. Finally, some thought is given to the ancient criticisms made of Athens’ democratic system.
