Chapter 3 aims to give a detailed account of the ancient Olympics. It begins with an examination of the Sacred Games, how we know about them, and what their origins might have been. It then describes the site of Olympia, at the heart of which was a holy sanctuary. There follows an examination of the various events in which athletes competed, and then of the Olympic festival, looking at the competitors, judges and spectators. Finally, after looking at how women were treated in relation to the games, the chapter compares the ancient and modern Olympics.
