Chapter 13: Sustainable construction methods

The case study that is described here is based on the construction of dwellings for social housing and was undertaken by Liverpool Architects, Denovo Design on behalf of Halton Housing. It was designed to achieve Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. The scheme utilises a traditional construction form supplemented by a range of environmental features that are aimed at delivering a sustainable end product. The main sustainability related design interventions are described on page 376 in the book.

Code 4 Sustainable Homes
Timber frame construction clad with masonry

Photovoltaics and sun-tunnels
Photovoltaic panels on roof and sun-tunnel to utilise natural light

Water recycling using water butts
