Managing Information Systems in the 21st century
Video interviews with IS/IT professionals
In exploring the subject of Information Systems, it is important to bear in mind that IT and IS are not just about technologies and systems, but also the people who design and implement them. This is why this book includes video interviews with IS/IT professionals who talk about their experience of Managing Information Systems in the 21st Century.
The interviewees are managers and practitioners working for private companies: EMI, Macmillan and Microsoft, in a public sector organization: Hampshire County Council and a manager who runs his own business: CloudOrigin.
Each interview opens with a discussion of the educational and professional background of the interviewee, followed by a few questions on some of the key topics of this book and some advice to students who wish to pursue a career in IS.

Matt Ballantine currently leads Microsoft’s technology evangelism work developing awareness of the company’s devices and services among marketing professionals in the UK. His background combines service delivery, development management and solutions, and enterprise architecture, with a broad range of management and consulting experience. The majority of his career has been centred around the media and creative sector. Matt did his major degree in sociology and his minor in Information Systems. Beginning his career at KPMG and then the London School of Economics, Matt spent eight years working at BBC Worldwide, the corporation’s primary commercial vehicle. A two-year sabbatical was spent coaching and training consulting and leadership skills at niche provider Techniques for Change, and then he returned to IT management as a business relationship manager at Reuters. Matt joined marketing firm Imagination in July 2008, and led their transformation of global IT and substantial move into cloud services. He joined Microsoft in March 2011.

Chief Information Officer
Hampshire County Council
Jos Creese is the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for Hampshire County Council. In addition to running the IT group of technology and business professionals, Jos supports a variety of business change programmes enabled by IT for the Council. Hampshire IT also provides services to several hundred other public sector organizations, and demands for shared services are growing. Jos has over 25 years of IT management experience, and has worked for central government, district and unitary councils. He is the founder and chair of the Local Public Service CIO Council, a member of the National Government CIO Council and was president of Socitm (the membership association for all ICT professionals working in Local Authorities and the Public and Third Sectors) in 2010/11. In 2011 he was voted the most innovative and influential UK CIO in the Silicon CIO50 survey.

Chief Technology Officer
Macmillan Publishers
Stephen Devlin is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Macmillan Publishers. His career includes a mix of consulting and senior technology management positions. He spent ten years with Accenture, designing and building technology platforms for both blue chip corporations and start-ups in the media and entertainment industry. He then joined EMI Music, where, as CTO he was responsible for all technology strategy and investment globally, and helped manage the company through the transition from physical to digital music sales. Prior to joining Macmillan Stephen was a senior advisor to several large media organizations, including Associated Newspapers, BBC Worldwide and WPP.

Richard Hall founded CloudOrigin in 2009 to focus on the business impact of cloud computing in public and private sectors. He is currently working with blue-chip brands around the world, venture capital, private equity firms and IT suppliers of all sizes. Richard graduated in Computing and Artificial Intelligence from the University of Sussex in 1989 where he won a BT sponsorship in Expert Systems and wrote for the computing section of the Guardian newspaper. Formerly UK Chief Technology Officer and Marketing Director for Avanade, the global Microsoft and Accenture joint venture, he has worked on some of the world’s largest application and infrastructure solutions. An Accenture Certified QA Partner, he was trained to review the largest technology and business process outsourcing (BPO) deals. Richard has been a member of various standards bodies and is co-author of the first FpML specification for Foreign Exchange trading. In 2010 he was elected a Fellow of both BCS (the Chartered Institute of IT) and the Institute of Directors.

Executive Vice President, Transformation & Digital Supply Chain
EMI Music
Richard Piercy is an executive vice-president at EMI Music. He works in the technology department and has global responsibility for business transformation; he also runs the global digital supply chain which is responsible for the digital manufacturing and distribution of all EMI Music's creative output. Prior to joining EMI Music, Richard ran the digital division of a pan-Asian sports media business based in Singapore, where he managed the internet properties for key brands such as the Asian PGA Tour, Asian Football Confederation, Asian Basketball Confederation and Korean National Soccer Team. Richard's career started as a consultant with Accenture and Boston Consulting Group.
