Analysing Sequences

This exercise relates to Chapter 7 - ‘Adjacency Pairs and Preference Organization’ and Chapter 8 - ‘Expanding Sequences’.

In the extracts here, identify the sequence structure of the interaction.

To do this, you need to begin by identifying the base sequence on which the rest of the talk depends. This means identifying an FPP and an SPP for this sequence and the action that is performed in the sequence.

Once you have identified the base sequence, see if there is any talk related to achieving the action of the base sequence that precedes the FPP of the base sequence (FPPbase). This will be a pre-expansion, so you need to identify what makes up the pre-expansion (FPP/SPP).

Then check if there is any talk that comes between the FPP that launches the action of the base sequence and the SPP that completes this action (SPPbase). Talk here is an insert expansion. For these, identify the organisation of the insert expansion. Then identify how the insert expansion relates to the components of the base sequence:

  • Does the insert expansion work in relation to something about the FPPbase? In this case, it is a form of post-first insert expansion.
  • Does the insert expansion work in relation to something about the SPPbase? In this case, it is a form of pre-second insert expansion.

Finally, check if there is any talk that follows the SPPbase and relates to accomplishing the action of the base sequence. This will post expansion of the sequence. For these, identify the organisation of the post expansion (FPP/SPP or SCT).
