The League of Nations

The League of Nations is a fascinating subject to research on its own, but it also established the key precedents for much of the work of the later United Nations. That’s why it’s the subject of chapter 2 of The United Nations in International History, but there is so much more information and areas for future research that I couldn’t include in the book. Therefore I hope that this webpage will assist you in going deeper in your understanding of the League.

To that end, you’ll see the menu of topics that you can use to start your search on the side:

Primary Sources will take you to links to archival sources as well as memoirs by those who worked for and participated in the League’s many activities.
General Studies will provide you with additional information about the organization, its origins, the League of Nations Societies that sprang up in a number of countries, and the International Federation of League of Nations Societies that sought to coordinate these societies.
International Movements within the League pulls together some of the diverse global movements—for peace and disarmament, for example—that worked in and through the League as well as more broadly.
League Organizations provides more detailed exploration of some of the many bodies that made up the League, such as its Health Organization and International Commission for Air Navigation.
