Need to learn an accent for an audition? Got the part but can't quite grasp the sounds? Want to expand your repertoire?
The Accent Handbook is a novel approach to accent-learning, providing a practical, digestible and customisable way of learning any accent of your choosing.
On this companion website, you will find the numbered recordings (including the tongue video mentioned in the book), as well as a library of 131 accent recordings from across the world.
The library of accent recordings, collected by the authors, was provided by contributors between the years 2021-2024.
Recordings are listed by continent, subregion, or geopolitical region. Contributors provided their year of birth, and self-identified their gender and ethnicity. Please note that descriptions of ethnicity may differ according to cultural norms, but that these were self-identified.
In the case of speakers whose countries or regions contain multiple official languages, or who speak a different first language from the official language of their country, their first language has been identified with an asterisk (*).
Recording quality may vary.
NB. This is not an exhaustive collection of global accent recordings. The accents included do not in any way have superiority over other accents. If we could have recorded every accent in the world, we would have!
Each accent recording is individual, and stands as an example of how one person speaks. A single accent recording does not represent the speech of an entire town, city, or country.
You may be from the place of a recording and not recognize all the features as your own. Be minded that everyone has an idiolect (their own personal speech habits) which may well differ from yours.
If you can’t find what you’re looking for among the recordings provided, the ‘Listening’ section on p.33 in The Accent Handbook has plenty of guidance on how to locate your own samples.
