In this component, you will study some of the leading thinkers and leaders credited with developing the Athenian democratic system – Solon, Cleisthenes, Ephialtes and Pericles. You will also learn about how the system worked and be able to reflect on the similarities and differences to modern democracies. The second key aspect of the component is to study critical responses to the democratic system from ancient writers: Thucydides, Aeschylus, Euripides, the Old Oligarch, Plato, and Aristophanes.
