Chapter 7: POVERTY AND WORLD HUNGER

1. As the text points out, some people voluntarily choose poverty, which suggests that poverty is certainly not always considered bad, and is sometimes thought to be good.  What considerations do you think are relevant to determining whether poverty is good or bad?

2. What are the two forms of the principle Peter Singer appeals to in order to justify his position on world poverty? (Section 7.4)  Do you think either form represents a principle you personally should strive to live by? If not, why not?  If so, how might you change your life to live by it?

3. Assuming that there is an obligation to fight poverty, do you think that it is an obligation that each individual has or an obligation that groups (e.g., societies, states, charitable organizations) have, or both?  How would you explain your answer?
